INFLUENCE. WITHOUT AUTHORITY ??!

Updated: Mar 31, 2020

You work in a global organisation together with people who don't report to you. That's true even for a small start up and the larger you get the more you have to collaborate with people in different teams all over the world. These days everyone needs to know how to influence others without issuing orders. The idea is known as Influence Without Authority and it is a style worth mastering. There are no short cuts but this is a quick guide to how to do it.

Be Clear To Yourself Ask yourself two things:What do I want to do? Why do I want to do it ?You then need to think about who the decision makers and what's on their minds.

Get Inside Their Heads The only way to persuade or change minds is to see things from the other person's perspective. You need to get inside their heads to understand what is important to them before you start convincing them what is important to you. Learning who the other people are can take time - particularly when they are from another culture.

Connect This is the bit where you have to be your most real. You need to develop the relationships with the people you want to influence to build trust. You have to show up online and off, and pay it forward with knowledge, help and goodwill. People are happier to work with others who they know, like and trust.

Commit for the Long Term Lets assume you understand their interests.have built the relationship over time - say at least weekly contact over 3 months - and got agreement. You can now make the changes happen and take responsibility for seeing them through.
